Orange Cone Madness

August.30.2004 : Along West 57th Street & 8th Avenue
This week is a good time to stay home from work or away from the midtown area. With the Republican G.O.P. Convention here this week, getting around is pure madness. The huge anti-Bush rally and the senseless sweeping arrests of the Critical Mass bicyclists, including bystanders, took place this weekend.
Miles of orange cones were placed to create lanes for Police and other emergency vehicles. Police presence is on every corner, even students were called for duty from the Police Academy.
If you want to raise your blood pressure or have a stroke, then drive around midtown this week!

Spent the day at the American Museum of Natural History with my daughter, Samantha. We had to visit the "Frogs: A Chorus of Colors" exhibit, which Samantha just loved. Now she's asking for me to get tadpoles, better than the colorful poisonous ones!

What A Nightmare
August.22.2004 : Somewhere on I-78 East between exits 39 & 40 in Pennsylvania
This is what I saw for over 1 1/2 hours... red tail-lights! The congestion was due to a few accidents and construction narrowing down to one lane. We left Hershey Park at around 7:20pm and didn't make it home until 1:30am. A trip that normally takes 3 - 3 1/2 hours, ended up being 6 hours on the road.
BTW, don't ever stop and eat at the Burger King on exit 49A. Even though the sign stated that it closed at 11:00pm on Sundays, they were locking the doors at 10:10pm. After reluctantly let people in, workers were slamming things around in anger because of the additional customers. While waiting around for 20 minutes for our food, we witnessed workers that were cleaning the garbage bins and taking the orders at the register, make the food without cleaning their hands or wearing gloves. The guy cleaning up the tables and tossing out the garbage didn't even bother changing his gloves. Ewwww!!! Double yuck!!! At that point we asked for our money back and walked out.
We highly recommend the McDonalds at the Dorney Park exit!!! They were jumping with business and certainly didn't mind the late night customers.

It was brutal and way below freezing when I got out of the car to take this shot. The waves was crashing up against the rocks and the spray was icy against the face. Getting back into the car, it took quite awhile before I got feeling back into my cheeks.

Hey Earl, Pickup!
This was truly funny. I see these two guys walking in front of me, both with phones to their ears. In unison they were looking at their phones, pressing a number, putting it back to their ears, listening for a sec or two, then repeating the process. This went on a few times until they went out of sync and doing the phone, button, ear routine alternately. They must've just come out of a very long meeting!

The Storyteller
Columbus Park. It separates the old city court buildings and the heart of Chinatown. Growing up in the 50s and early 60s, my parents would take us there, my two brothers and sister. The fifth sibling, my youngest brother didn’t come into this world until much later. There are old photos showing my mom pushing us in strollers or us in our Sunday best playing or being pushed on the swings. I remember the part where the sprinklers were turned on in the “wading pool” and we’d wear our bathing suits and go running in. It was one way to cool down in the summers.
In 1969 I met Lily (my wife), and we’d hang out there with my brother and our friends. I remember the summers filled with old Italian men from the neighborhood, hanging around in groups on the benches. Talking and laughing. Some were playing dominoes or cards on folding tables. Others were playing Bocce ball. After a few years, we stopped hanging around there. So did they.
Today, Columbus Park is a magnet for Chinatown and its local people. Residents of all ages come here; moms pushing strollers, parents pushing their children in swings, teenagers playing basketball, men & women doing Tai Chi, groups of men playing Chinese Chess and a place for the elderly to congregate for some fresh air.
Everyday, a new generation is introduced to the park. Be they young or old. Having fond memories that are like photographs… snapshots of moments frozen in time.

The Journey
NY is one of the states that collects a 5 cents deposit every time you purchase a can or bottle of soda. Most people don't return the empty can or bottle to collect their 5 cents deposit and just toss them into the garbage. To some people, finding those empty cans and bottles in the garbage is like finding gold!
Everyday you'll see them trudging through the city, rummaging through the garbage... rain or shine! Some people are nice enough to separate the cans and bottles from the trash, leaving them in plastic bags by the curb.
Every store that sells sodas, must take the empties and give you back the deposit. But, it sure isn't good for business if you get people returning the empties by the hundreds!
As a result, there are many collection centers throughout the city. Every morning they're lined up to get their money, even before the center is open.

Explanation...
Why am I taking shots of statues?
In April of this year, we visited my sister-in-law in London and I was amazed at the number of statues in the city. I decided to create a series called Sentinels of the City, which will feature any statue that is outside in the elements 24/7. To me they are like guardians or sentries!

Little Fishies

This is my 36 gallon reef aquarium that I'd started in September 2002. It was originally going to be a fresh water fish tank. My sister-in-law's husband, Ken, refers to it as my "maintenance free" hobby!
Photo Friday entry "prosperity"
Here's the definition of "prosperity" from Merriam-Webster Online: the condition of being successful or thriving; especially : economic well-being
Since my reef aquarium is a successful & thriving community plus it's a hobby that requires some money, I thought it would be appropriate for this theme.
